I must say, ME3 was a total disappointment for me. (i got it for my birthday)
There are so many things that are just terrible. For one thing, the story is pretty bad, another thing is that they took out a lot of the RPG elements and turned it into a "go to map, kill a whole bunch of grunts, maybe a few strategic elements, complete 'objective' and leave." They completely scrapped the whole idea that going to another planet would have more things than a shooting gallery, like side quests. They failed in making another planet seem like another planet, and not like a shitty stage. A perfect example of this is the Noveria part of ME1. ME1's story was really dynamic and RPGlike. it made you feel like what you did changed things; and it did. dialect very often had paragon and renegade options. Now they only appear once in a while.
Another thing that I hate is the way they did the Citadel. Before, you could go to lots of different places and they were interconnected. it made the citadel feel very big. now it's just a whole bunch of separate "maps" with terrible scenery. if you look a bit further than in front of you, you begin to see all the shitty money-saving backgrounds that the developers put in. Things like non-moving people that are just 2d cardboard images, maybe with one or two people that keep doing the same thing over and over again.
Another thing that absolutely ruined the experience is the one-sidedness of the citadel. Everything is made to look and appeal to humans when it should have been the other way around. Humans are relatively new to Citadel Space so most things should be in other dialects and symbols. A perfect example is the food dispenser with the knife and fork. I mean seriously? What kind of ancient station that's been long inhabited by other species has food dispensers and other shit that uses Human symbols and English of all languages. Another example of this is all the writing on the citadel. If you looked carefully at the original citadel from ME1 things were not always in English. Yes, sometimes there were, but it was a good balance with other languages. The other thing they did was make all races have the same values as humans. Not all species lust. So why does there always have to be a strip club? Of course there would be one on the station, but why make it one of the few accessible locations on the citadel when they could have used the time they spent making that adding all the shit I mentioned here.
The last thing i'll mention (it's not the only other thing that i haven't mentioned), is the technobabble. I understand it's science fiction but the LEAST the writers could have done is make it seem the slightest bit real. Some of the shit they say doesn't even make sense! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out some better lines.
So in conclusion, yes, they added a few good things like the melee attacks. But they completely lack in other things that are essential.
All in short, ME1 > ME3 in almost every way. ME3 = very big disappointment.
